Appello, a leading global provider of location based services, enters India following a deal led by Nokia Location & Commerce. India’s largest telecom operator has launched a voice guided traffic and navigation service built by the Swedish company Appello and powered by Nokia’s best in class location content. This is the first time an operator in India has offered the combination of real-time traffic information alongside turn-by-turn guidance.
Appello is confident that the service will revolutionise and improve the Indian commuter’s daily driving and pedestrian experience. Appello has delivered a world leading mobile cross-platform solution, enabling India’s largest telecom operator to offer the same features and functions across all mobile platforms. The solution is based on a freemium business model powered by ads. The freemium model includes lifetime maps, search and social sharing functionality but also premium up-sell services such as real-time traffic information and navigation. Covering the most common handsets in India, the service is initially available for Symbian, Blackberry, Android and Bada platforms.

For this new Indian service, Nokia map data provides detailed coverage for over 4,000 cities and in excess of six million Points of Interest – globally it powers 175 million navigation enabled devices. In addition, Nokia Location & Commerce is delivering comprehensive real-time traffic information to travelers in six key metros – Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.
